8th Nanomaterials Webinar

Mechanics of Engineered Nanomaterials for Energy and Environmental Applications I

Welcome everyone to the first part of the Nanomaterials Webinar with the theme "Mechanics of Engineered Nanomaterials for Energy and Environmental Applications". We are very much honored to have several prominent scientists in nanomaterials research to present their exciting research and hear their vision towards a more environmentally friendly and energy efficient future as a materials researcher.

I would also like to take this chance to bring your attention about the call-for-papers for an on-going special issue with the same title of "Mechanics of Engineered Nanomaterials for Energy and Environmental Applications". All of our speakers and audiences are highly encouraged to submit your recent original research or comprehensive review to this special issue.

Date: 16 September 2022

Time: 3:00 pm CEST | 9:00 am EDT | 9:00 pm CST Asia

Chair

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA

Introduction
Bio
Prof. Dr. Ming Dao is the Principal Investigator and Director of MIT’s Nanomechanics Laboratory, a Principal Research Scientist in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT. He obtained his BS in engineering mechanics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and his MSc and PhD in materials science from the University of California at San Diego. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and received twice the best paper award from the Japan Institute of Metals and Materials (2006 & 2013). He was named the 2012 Singapore Research Chair Professor in Bioengineering and Infectious Disease by MIT, and was a visiting professor with the National Institute of Blood Transfusion, Paris, France (INTS, 2016-2017) and an adjunct professor with Xi’an Jiaotong University, Xi’an, China (2011-2020). Since 2018, he has been a visiting professor at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He has also chaired or co-chaired 17 international symposiums/workshops. He was ranked as a top 2% scientist in the world in the database established by Stanford University in all three updates published in June 2019, October 2020, and October 2021, respectively. He’s also ranked as a top 0.3% most cited author by exaly.com.

Invited Speakers

School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Introduction
Bio
Prof. Dr. Huajian Gao is a Chinese-American mechanician who is widely known for his contributions to the field of solid mechanics, particularly on the micro- and nanomechanics of thin films, hierarchically structured materials, and cell-nanomaterial interactions. He is a Distinguished University Professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and Walter H. Annenberg Professor Emeritus of Engineering at Brown University. He is a member of National Academy of Sciences (USA), National Academy of Engineering (USA), American Academy of Arts and Sciences, German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Academia Europaea (Academy of Europe).

Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science, Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China

Introduction
Bio
Prof. Dr. Lei Lu received her Master and Ph.D. degrees in Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1997 and 2000, respectively. From 2003, she worked at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), NIMS, Riso DTU as a visiting scientist. In 2005, she became a full professor in Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science at Institute of Metal Research. Her research interests revolve around the synthesis, microstructure design and characteristic, plastic deformation and mechanisms of heterogeneous nanostructured metallic materials. Specifically, she has active research in strengthening and toughening materials by engineering twin boundaries at the nanometer scale and by spatial gradient multi-scale structures. She authored and co-authored over 130 peer-review international journal publications (including Science, Nature, Acta Mater. etc) with total citations exceeding 19000, held 9 domestic patents, 6 international patents and presented over 70 invited lectures at international conferences. Her work had been recognized by numerous awards, including National Science Foundation for Outstanding Youth, Tomorrow Star in Science by Elsevier and Science New in China, Young Female Scientists Award of China and TMS Brimacombe Medal Award etc. She was also selected as a Thomson Reuters highly cited Researcher and Elsevier Highly Cited Scholar. From January 2016, she is serving Acta Materialia & Scripta Materialia journals as an editor.

Department of Nuclear Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA

Introduction
Bio
Ju Li is Battelle Energy Alliance Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering and Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT. Professor Li's group is developing novel nanostructured materials for energy storage and conversion, in applications such as batteries, fuel cells, and hydrogen-embrittlement resistant steels. He is a highly cited author with a h-index of over 100 and with 55,000+ citations.

Sandia National Laboratory, USA

Introduction
Bio
Dr. Chris San Marchi is a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore CA. Dr. San Marchi and his colleagues are studying the interactions between hydrogen and materials, unraveling the complex nature of hydrogen’s effects on the performance of structural materials, in particular a collection of phenomena commonly referred to as gaseous hydrogen embrittlement. His research is motivated by the emerging deployment of hydrogen technologies, such as hydrogen-powered industrial trucks, fuel cell electric vehicles and hydrogen blending into natural gas. Dr. San Marchi has co-authored over 100 conference and journal publications and several book chapters, providing the scientific and engineering basis for hydrogen-related codes and standards both domestically and internationally, including contributions to the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) as well as the UN’s Global Technical Regulation No. 13 for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Vehicles.
